SM Entertainment launched its new girl band, six years after Red Velvet, in 2014, with the name Aespa. Aespa Debut Album, Members Introduction, and First Show
Aespa debuted officially on November 17, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. KST with the release of the digital single “Black Mamba,” which has a track length of 2 minutes and 54 seconds. Yes, this girl band debuted only with a single video release, not a single album, nor a mini-album or extended play (EP). The single Black Mamba was written and composed by Omega, Ella Isaacson, Gabriela Geneva (NIIVA), Jordan Reyes, Shaun Lopez, Scott Chesak, and Yoo Young-jin, while arranged by Lee Soo-man (founder of SM Entertainment). It was on October 26, 2020, when SM Entertainment announced the name and logo poster of its new four-member girl band.
All the Aespa members were revealed between October 27 and 29 in the order of Winter, Karina, Ningning, and Giselle through the SNS accounts of the group. The trailer video, which featured all four members, was also released on November 2, 2020, and finally, the group debuted on November 17. The group also released a Black Mamba performance video titled “The Debut Stage,” where the girls performed their debut single and the stage was decorated physically as well as digitally.
On November 20, 2022, Aespa held its debut showcase, where they perfromed Black Mamba, broadcast on Music Bank and aired on KBS2 at 5:15 p.m. KST. Then they again performed on November 22 on Inkigayo, broadcast on SBS, and on November 24 on The Show, broadcast on SBS M. Also on January 17, 2021, the group won its first show on Inkigayo, a music program aired on SBS.
Black Mamba Sales Performance
Talking about the performance of the Aespa debut single, Black Mamba got the highest number of views within 24 hours for any debut single, which was 21.4 million views, and within 51 days and 12 hours, the video surpassed 100 million views, setting a new record in the history of K-pop to hit the 100 million views target for a debut single. Also, the single Black Mamba peaked at 49th position in the Circle Album Chart and at fifth position in the US Billboard Digital Song Sales.
