NewJeans debuted officially on July 22, 2022, with the release of the single “Attention.” There was no promotion or update regarding the group’s debut. Like every K-pop group, there were a lot of promotional videos, teasers, and poster releases for their debut, but NewJeans was an exception. They debuted as a surprise, without announcing even any kind of group name or member revelation. On July 1, 2022, ADOR released an animated clip of five rabbits with information on the dropping date of its first content through ADOR’s SNS accounts. Also, NewJeans dropped its second single, “Hype Boy,” on July 23, a 50-second clip with information regarding the group members’ names and four other music videos representing each group member’s version.
Following two days, NewJeans released the b-side track “Hurt” of their debut self-titled extended play (EP). Finally, on August 1, 2022, the music video of the third single “Cookie” was released, followed by the NewJeans self-titled debut mini-album released digitally on the same day, and its physical release was done on August 8. The debut extended play New Jeans has four tracks (three singles and one b-side track.) in its tracklist, which are as follows: “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” and “Hurt” wholly made it a track-length of 12 minutes and 47 seconds. Danielle and Hanni took part in the writing part of Attention and Hype Boy, respectively.
NewJeans girls held their first live countdown on their debut day through YouTube, and their debut showcase was held on August 4 on M Countdown, a South Korean program broadcasted by Mnet, where the members performed all three singles. Further promotion was covered by performing Attention at Music Bank (a music program on KBS2) on August 5 and also at Inkigayo (a music program on SBS) on August 7, where they performed the single Attention and Cookie.
NewJeans’ debut mini-album was the biggest success in K-pop history. Their extended play recorded pre-orders of 444,000 copies, which is the highest for any K-pop girl band’s debut album. Also on its release date, the sales went to 262,800 copies, which broke the record set by Le Sserafim’s album Fearless. New Jeans peaked at first place on the Circle Album Charts, twelfth at Oricon Japanese Album, and sixth at US Billboard World Albums in the weekly charts.
